THE family of a young footballer who died in a motorcycle accident in Thailand have hit out at the way his death has been handled by the authorities.

Kenneth Ibrahim, known as Kenny, died in May following an accident in Phuket, where he had gone to attend a summer-long Thai boxing camp.

The family have been informed that the driver of the truck which collided with his motorcycle, who reportedly had 190ml of alcohol in his bloodstream, has been charged with a drink-driving offence.

Kenny's family have now broken their silence about their dissatisfaction with the authroities and companies which dealt with the death, Kenny's parents Ken and Tina, of New Road, Chingford and brother Dean claim:

Insurance company AXA, with whom Kenny had a travel insurance policy, repeatedly bombarded the family with “insenstive” phone calls requesting information in the days after Kenny's death.

Thai authorities used an embalming fluid which is illegal in the UK (but legal in Thailand), which disfigured Kenny's skin, meaning family members were advised not to look at the body.

They were told by Global Network, the company repatriating the body, they could go to Heathrow airport to view it, but when they got there it was in a van in the middle of a busy cargo area.

The family feel that information about the police investigation and the manner in which Kenny died has also not been forthcoming.

Dean said: “We have been upset by the way the information has come back from Thailand, the way he was brought back and the problems with the insurance, it has made everything more difficult for us.”

Global Networks director Damien Melville said it is not company policy to encourage families of deceased relatives to go to airports to view bodies.

THE Ibrahim family are to set up a charity in honour of 21-year-old Kenny, who enjoyed sport, playing football for Brimsdown Rovers, and was a keen fan of music.

The purpose of the KNI Foundation will be to establish and run sports and performing arts programmes, and to support gifted and talented people.

A special night of entertainment will be held on October 17 to launch the charity.

The event at the County Hotel, 30 Oak Hill, Woodford Green will run from 7pm to 1am.
