PROVISIONAL test results for the borough's primary school pupils are again some of the best in the country - but overall marks have remained unchanged on last year.

According to figures released by the Government, in this year's Key Stage Two SATS the proportion of children getting the 'standard' grade four mark or higher in English, Maths and Science was exactly the same as in 2008.

Overall, 83 per cent of pupils achieved the standard in English, with 81 per cent doing so in Maths and 89 per cent reaching it in Science.

However the grades could change slightly due to some pending reviews and remarking.

The results put the borough in the top third of authorities in the country.

A council spokeswoman said: "These results are a testament to the hard work of school staff and of their pupils and places our children in a very good position to make the best of the opportunities that await them in secondary schools in September."
