A JUNIOR doctor has hit out at Whipps Cross for ticketing his car while voluntarily working for the Leytonstone hospital.

Dr Stanley Yu, of north London, works at St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London.

He says he volunteered to run an oncology clinic for two weeks at Whipps in the absence of a doctor's registrar. Without his help patients would not have been treated for two weeks, he claims.

He paid for parking on July 22, but his clinic overran, and when he finally returned to his car at 6.30pm, his vehicle had been ticketed.

He has paid the £15 fine, but in an email to Whipps chief executive Lucy Moore, Dr Yu said he wants the ticket refunded.

He said: “I felt very upset and let down by Whipps Cross Hospital.

“I came to the hospital as a gesture of goodwill and I was clearly not appreciated.”

“If a hospital is in central London, I agree that we  should use public transport.

“However, if a hospital is in the middle of nowhere and public transport is very limited, why do we have to pay to park in a staff car park given we have already spent petrol and car maintenance money to come to work?

“Given I work in central london, and I live in N11, the only choice I have to reach Whipps Cross in good time for the afternoon clinic is to drive.”

Dr Yu claims that more than a fortnight later, he has still not had a response from Dr Moore or anybody at the hospital.

He said he will not do any more work at the hospital until the matter is resolved.

The Guardian is awaiting a response from Whipps Cross University Hospital Trust.
