A FORMER health official has slammed a supermarket after finding broken glass, fat and what appeared to be blood in a meat freezer.
Len Wollaston, of Whitter Road, Manor Park, was shopping at the store, in Gainsborough Road, Leytonstone, when he noticed broken glass in a freezer containing lamb.
On closer inspection he discovered blood, fat and what he describes as “scum” in the bottom of the freezer.
He reported his concerns to a Tesco staff member and was assured the problem would be rectified, but nearly three weeks later, on July 26, it was still in a bad state.
Mr Wollaston said: “I have worked in the health service and have been involved in the transport of blood and I know that the state of that freezer was perfect for e-coli and salmonella.”
Mr Wollaston has been offered a £10 goodwill voucher, but has returned it.
He said: “I am not looking for anything for myself, I am just concerned about health and safety.”
A letter to Mr Wollaston from Tesco customer service manager John McGovern admitted the freezers at the store were "disgusting."
The Guardian visited the store today (Friday) and the freezers appeared to be in a better condition.
A Tesco spokesman claimed the item in the freezers was merely beetroot juice, but Mr Wollaston is adamanant it was blood as it had congealed.
