A scheme which sources fresh, organic local produce has celebrated its first birthday.
The Organiclea Community Growers' vegetable scheme allows customers to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from gardeners and allotment holders in Waltham Forest, as well as produce from small organic farmers in Norfolk and Cambridge.
Next year the scheme's organisers, food growing co-operative Organiclea, hopes that 30 per cent of the produce will be grown in Waltham Forest.
Organiclea member Clare Joy said: “Our growth, and that of other community food enterprises that we know, has been less affected by the credit crunch than some other high street businesses.
“We wonder if this is because of the different reasons we are here – we are working together, our members are not simply ‘consumers’.
This shields us from the rollercoaster of other markets.”
Organiclea is based at the Hornbeam Centre, in Hoe Street, Walthamstow.
