ENGLAND footballer Jermain Defoe is reportedly starting legal action against Essex Police for wrongful arrest and imprisonment.
Mr Defoe, who plays for Tottenham Hotspur, was driving down Woodridden Hill, in Waltham Abbey on July 27 when officers pulled him over claiming he was driving while disqualified.
Mr Defoe had been handed a driving ban earlier this month for speeding on the M11 at Chigwell, but that was suspended after he launched an appeal.
Despite the star's protestations he was taken to Harlow Police station and locked in a cell before being released without charge more than six hours later.
Mr Defoe's solicitor Nick Freeman has reportedly confirmed Mr Defoe has authorised him to start proceedings against the force.
A statement from the force said: "Essex Police is conducting an internal investigation and is liaising with Mr Defoe's legal team to ascertain the details of his complaint.
"It would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time."
