NEW legislation means that Redbridge Council has to change the way it operates, and it is keen to find out what residents would prefer.
Currently the council has a leader and cabinet which are both elected by the full chamber annually and the leader can be removed by a vote of no confidence.
But under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 a new system is required.
This could either be a “new style” leader and cabinet where full council would elect a leader for a fixed term of four years and the Leader would select a Cabinet and decide who exercises executive functions.
Alternatively the authority may chose a directly elected mayor and cabinet. Residents would vote for a Mayor for four years who could not be removed in that time.
The Mayor would select a cabinet of up to nine councillors and would decide which exercise executive functions.
If you would like to provide your opinion on what you prefer then visit redbridge.gov.uk, visit your local library or call 8708 2019.
Alternatively you can send your comments to Policy Team, Town Hall, PO Box 2, Ilford, Essex IG1 1DD or email strategic.services@redbridge.gov.uk by Friday, October 16.
