WORRIED residents have called for more traffic calming measures in their street after a car was flipped on its roof during another terrifying crash.
People living in New Wanstead have demanded speed cameras and flash up signs be introduced in their road, after a Ford Probe smashed into two parked vehicles and overturned at 5pm yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.
The accident comes just weeks after another on the same street, when a driver lost control and crashed into the side of an estate agent's office at the junction with Wanstead High Street.
No-one was killed or injured during yesterday's incident, but all three cars were badly damaged and the road was sealed off by police for more than an hour.
Resident Tom Barrett said many cars are driven far too fast down the road and said he wants speed activated signs and enforcement cameras to be introduced to force motorists to slow down.
He said: "New Wanstead and Hermon Hill have always had a problem with speeding drivers, and most of us can't believe that there aren't speed cameras in place already.
"We need a flash up speed sign or camera there to deter speeding drivers."
These views were echoed by fellow New Wanstead resident Maurice Garfield.
The grandfather-of-six said: "Speed cameras may help slow people down.
"The problem here is that people speed down this hill towards the traffic lights and accelerate to get through before the lights change, which puts people at risk."
A police spokeswoman said: "The driver decamped and was not on scene when police arrived.
"There were no arrests or reported injuries."
A Redbridge Council spokeswoman said: "There are strict criteria on where speed cameras are sited which are rigorously applied by the London Camera Partnership who have to approve all installations across London, including those in Redbridge.
"For this particular road we fall short of these criteria, over which we have no control, but we are working on other measures to improve road safety in this area for next year, funding permitting and these will be reported to a future meeting of Area Committee one."
