A BAN on drinking alcohol in areas of Epping will begin this week in an attempt to reduce anti-social behaviour.
The district council has created control zones where police officers can seize alcohol from people drinking in those areas.
Following reports of anti-social behaviour the ban has been introduced at Stonards Hill and Lower Swaines playing fields.
The Guardian recently reported how people were angered by the proposals because it put restrictions on those who were not causing anti-social behaviour while drinking alcohol.
But Essex Police have insisted that the new rules are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities.
Epping Inspector Craig Carrington said: “These orders will only affect those drinking alcohol and causing a nuisance or are likely to cause a nuisance within the zone areas.
"My officers will deal positively with any offenders in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour, disorder and criminal damage.
"We want to ensure our community remains a safe and attractive place for people to live, visit and socialise.”
