ONCE the shopping district for Walthamstow’s wealthy residents and one of the oldest streets in the borough, Wood Street has a fascinating history that Marianne Zierau will explore in a guided walk on Sunday.
With buildings dating back to the early 18th Century, you can learn about the residents of the Clock House, including Jacob Jacobson, director of the infamous South Sea Company, and hear how Jones’ butcher shop is now the health food store Second Nature.
The walk will also visit the sites of Wood Street’s past film studios, as well as the former cinemas, the Arcadia and the Crown, which now houses the Wood Street Market.
Arranged in partnership with the Walthamstow Historical Society, there is no need to book and the walk is free.
Meet on Sunday, August 23, 2 pm, outside the Wood Street Library. For more information call 07792 750 017
