AN AMBITIOUS plan to build a nine bedroom apartment block on the former site of an historic mansion has left the community divided.

The controversial development, in Glebelands Avenue, South Woodford, would involve the demolition of a 1950s bungalow and the construction of a three storey complex on land once occupied by the 18th century Glebe Lands House.

The scheme has left residents and traders in the area deeply divided, with some arguing that it would be completely out of character with the neighbourhood and add to parking congestion - and others seeing it as an improvement on the existing house that would bring extra business to South Woodford.

Tito Singh Bance, whose sister owns the bungalow, said the new flats have been designed to echo the architectural style of the adjacent Glebelands House Rest Home - a converted coach house which is all that is left of the former estate.

The father-of-four who has lived in South Woodford for most of his life said: "This area has a rich history and we have taken great care to design this development to take that into account.

"The building will be made of similar materials to the residential home next door to stay in keeping with the heritage of the old estate."

"I've had lots of support for this from residents around here and from businesses in George Lane, who see this as a very positive development."

The plan is supported by the rest home's manager, Hafeeza Akram.

She said: "The design is very attractive, and sympathetic with how our building looks.

"We don't believe there will be any problems with parking."

These views were not shared by Kevin Fletcher of South Woodford High Road, who believes the area has more than its fair share of flats already.

He said: "Why do we need another block of flats.

"People used to move to this area because it was leafy and not crowded, but now it feels really congested.

"You just can't find a parking space around here anymore."

Barbara Lennon of The Drive believes the building would be out of place in the street.

She said: "It would look totally wrong. This road has an art deco character to it, and this block of flats would stick out like a sore thumb."

The development will be discussed at a Regulatory Committee meeting at Ilford Town Hall on Monday - which starts at 7.15am.
