WHIPPS Cross Hospital have played down reports of a "crippling" computer virus in its IT system, saying the problem has now been resolved.

Earlier today the hospital said it was still fixing the problem, which was first identified last week, but in a new statement a spokeswoman has said systems are now running as normal.

A spokeswoman said: "Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust can confirm that on August 5 the conficker worm virus entered our IT system on site.

"As a result about five per cent of the Trust's PCs (30 machines) were affected and were out of action for a number of days.

"The virus, which was quickly isolated, did not affect the delivery of patient care and all systems are now operating normally."

However a patient told the Guardian they had been informed that the virus had caused widespread "crippling" damage.
