DOZENS of homes in Woodford Green have had their phone and internet connections cut off after thieves stole a set of cables.

Forest Approach is just one of several roads in Redbridge to report problems after crooks cut out a set of copper wiring from a BT green roadside cabinet on Friday morning (August 21).

Engineers working at the scene have reportedly told residents some homes could be cut off for as long as two weeks, although many households had the problem fixed within two days.

There have also been similar problems in Gants Hill, Highams Park and Waltham Abbey.

This has led some residents to suspect that a gang of copper thieves are methodically visiting BT cabinets across East London and West Essex.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It's been a real pain, I have to make a lot of calls for my business but I've been left completely stranded.

“Most thefts only affect a small number of people, but with this everyone on the street is a victim.”

Neighbour Ron Wortley-Millek said: “The BT engineers have been fantastic, they've been working day and night to fix the problem.

“I've been working on the programmes for the Woodford Festival and if it wasn't for their quick response I might've missed our printing deadline.”

BT are expected to comment shortly.
