AN investigation has been launched after a popular doctor’s surgery was closed without patients being consulted.

Primary care trust NHS West Essex (PCT) decided it would cost too much to keep Sun Street surgery in Waltham Abbey open after GP Dr Lahka retired due to ill-health last month.

Patients furious at not being consulted on the closure staged a number of protests, saying the town’s remaining surgeries were already over-subscribed.

PCT boss Aiden was heckled during angry scenes at a public meeting held to explain the decision and accused of putting money before people.

Now Epping Forest District Council has asked the West Essex Area Forum to investigate how the closure was handled.

Head of the patient forum Kim Ashley said that many of the patients’ worst fears have come true.

She said: "All the surgeries are being inundated, there are many of us who haven't even signed up to a new surgery yet. But I am hearing stories of some people waiting for days, weeks even, to see someone.

"The PCT wanted him shut down, they didn't care who they had to trample to do it, or even how we felt.

"There was no consultation and basically they think they can do whatever they like and we won't complain or fight back, well they're wrong."

Patients have been invited to share their views at a public meeting at the town hall, on Highbridge Street, on Monday September 14, which starts at 2pm.

The review group will gather evidence from people affected on how the closure was handled and what has happened to patients since.

Anyone who wishes to speak at the meeting must give prior notice to Sophie Campion on 01245 430715 or by email at sophie.campion@essex.gov.uk by Tuesday September 1.
