CONSULTATION has now closed on proposals which could change the face of Leyton and Leytonstone.

Part of the Nothern Olympic Fringe Masterplan, which covers Leyton, Leytonstone and Stratford, the area is set to undergo major redevelopment in run up to the 2012 Olympics and beyond.

The consultation set out proposals for a number of sites in Leyton and Leytonstone and included suggestions for the former ice rink site as well as the possibility of reopening Lea Bridge Station.

A statement on the council's website reads: “The Northern Olympic Fringe Masterplan will set out a plan for future development in this area, in which inward investment will enable a whole range of improvements to travel routes, open spaces and shopping areas.”

Proposals also included the possibility of redeveloping land on Leyton Marshes, near Lammas School, and were met with fierce opposition.

The New Lammas Lands Defence Committee (NLLDC) spoke out against the proposals as they felt they would “threaten the essentially rural character of the area”.

They feared new roads could cut across the marshes, although cabinet member for investment and enterprise Terry Wheeler maintained that “nothing was set in stone”

A protest walk was also held on August 11 and encouraged members to take part in the consultation in order to keep the proposals from going further.

The consultation, which was carried out by Urban Practitioners, formally closed on August 20 and results are expected this autumn.
