WEST Ham footballer Calum Davenport is said to be in a stable condition following his stabbing on Saturday.

The 26-year-old defender and his mother Kim Stupple, were stabbed at her home in Kempston, Bedfordshire in the early hours.

The footballer remains in hospital in a serious but non life-threatening condition.

He is having emergency surgery on his legs and his career is reportedly in the balance.

Worrell Whitehurst, 25, of Finsley Walk, Derby, has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm to Mr Davenport and appeared before magistrates in Bedford yesterday.

He is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm to Ms Stupple, who is also said to be in a stable condition.

Mr Davenport, a centre half, is a former England Under-21 international.

He moved to the Upton Park club for £3m from Tottenham Hotspur two years ago.
