MOTORBIKE groups have said that a stretch of road near Epping is dangerous following a fatal crash where the father of a West Ham player died.

Ian Collison, 46 from Mendip Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire was driving his red Honda when he crashed on the M25 near the M11 interchange.

An air ambulance was called just before noon on Sunday (August 23) but Mr Collison was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations have already been carried out at the scene, where major works are taking place to widen the M25.

Andrew Beckett, Senior Observer for East London Advanced Motoring said: “I have done that stretch many times and the lanes are narrow so there's less room to drive. The hazards that will occur are more frequent because cars change from lane to lane.

"It's very sad that this man lost his life. Motorcyclists need to be extra cautious with their planning and take into account the potential hazards that might happen.”

Mick Lake from Waltham Abbey who is a member of the British Owners Club said: “I don't use the M25 if I can help it. Cars changing lanes is dangerous for any cyclists. But in this area it seems to be worse than anywhere else.

"The main danger is drivers not paying attention. When they get into their cars they switch on auto pilot.

"One of our members was hurt quite badly in a crash recently because unfortunately car drivers aren't very aware and there's not enough education for car drivers about motorcyclists.”

Police are appealing for witness to come forward and Commander for the Chigwell Road Policing Unit Stephen Pierce said: “There have been a few collisions along there but nothing as serious as this. That's the first fatality this year.

"We have witness appeal signs up if anyone wants to give any information and we will be looking at CCTV evidence.

"To anyone who is worried about safety on that stretch of road, I would say that as normal, when traffic is going slowly like that and it's heavy traffic then it's good practice to keep a good breaking distance, especially when there are other vulnerable road users, such as those on motorbikes.

"But this particular accident it was just one vehicle.”
