FOUR men are to appear in court this Friday in connection with a mass brawl in Wanstead High Street at the weekend.

The men were seized by police following the fight, which started at 11.30pm on Saturday night outside Bar Room Bar.

Witnesses have variously estimated to the Guardian that anything from ten to 60 people were involved in the brawl.

One of the witnesses was reportedly an off-duty police detective inspector, who is expected to be a key witness in any court hearings.

While the fight originally started at Bar Room Bar, events soon spilled out into the rest of the High Street.

One witness told the Guardian several men grabbed chairs from the Purbani Tandoori restaurant to use as weapons during the brawl, while another man was hit over the head with a bin.

Another man, believed to be a bouncer at Bar Room Bar, was knocked unconscious as he tried to diffuse the situation.

A further witness said he saw the fight continue in the George pub, with some men smashing glass bottles to use as weapons.

When the police arrived many of those involved ran through the George's beer garden and escaped along Eastern Avenue.

While several men were covered in blood at the scene, a police spokeswoman said no-one required hospital treatment and that injuries suffered were relatively superficial.

Three of the men will appear at Redbridge Magistrates Court charged with affray, with the fourth being charged with a public order offence.

Police said an earlier statement that five men were arrested at the scene was incorrect.
