Established in 1843, the Leyton Allotment Society has been holding an annual flower and vegetable show since well before World War One, and on Saturday this long tradition will continue.
From carrots and onions, to dahlias and perennials, experienced and novice society members alike will present their various wares for judging before the show opens to the public at 2pm.
Chairman Cyril Smith, a retired engineer, has been with the society since 1954 and regularly picks up awards.
Speaking about the recent surge in popularity for allotments, sprung on the back of environmental concerns and the grow-your-own movement, he says: “There was a time when you couldn’t give them away, but this new interest in allotments is marvellous, and it really has brought many different communities together.”
Leyton Allotment Society, Annual Flower and Vegetable Show, Osier Way, off Oliver Road, Leyton, Saturday, August 29. Public are welcome from 2pm.
