PLANS that would have seen a private hospital greatly expand in size have been unanimously rejected by councillors.

Holly House Hospital's plans to expand its site in Buckhurst Hill High Road, had drawn widespread objections from nearby residents concerned at an increase in traffic and the new buildings' dominance.

Members of Epping Forest District Council's planning sub-committee have now refused permission for the expansion which would have seen the hospital gain 13 extra consultant rooms, 21 extra bedrooms and 76 extra staff.

Colin Smith, 60, of Duchess Grove, who had led residents campaigning against the scheme, welcomed the decision but remained concerned about the future of the site.

He said: “We were obviously pleased although it just means it goes on and on until we find out what they want to do next.

“The planning officer tried very hard to justify it saying it was no higher than the neighbouring properties. How this three-storey monstrosity could be the same height as a neighbouring bungalow I've no idea.

“About 40 residents turned up which was good. It was one of the largest crowds I've seen at a planning meeting so any Government inspector will have to turn over that.”
