A BITTER dispute has broken out over plans to hold a weekly street market near Woodford station.

The proposals, which would see stalls along the Jubilee Market and Jubilee Parade stretch of Snakes Lane East, have divided residents and traders since they were first floated by businessman Robert Bell last week.

Mr Bell, who owns a hair salon at the site, said a weekly market selling farm produce, clothing and other items would help bring more shoppers to the area and “liven things up.”

But some fear the plans – which have yet to be submitted to the council for approval - will bring “clutter and litter” to the area.

Much of the pavement area in Snakes Lane East is owned and maintained by the shopkeepers themselves, and many, including staff at Lunch 4 U and Lilies Nail Studio, are firmly in support of the idea.

But not everyone is convinced.

Several residents have contacted the Guardian with their concerns, but most do not wish to be named.

One woman said: “This is going to be tatty, clutter up the pavement and they'll be litter everywhere. We don't want it.”

Fellow resident Maxine James, of nearby Claremont Grove, said: "It could well bring a lot of rubbish to Snakes Lane East."

Traders too are divided.

Pete Jarvis, who works at JPC Electrical Wholesalers in the street, said: “I don't think we're going to get involved.

“I don't think it would put any business our way and we wouldn't want a market right outside the shop because it might obstruct people coming in.”

But Mr Bell said: “It will bring some vibrancy to the area.

“At the moment what with the economy it's hard for businesses. I used to employ 55 staff in my shops but now I'm down to 15. We have to do things like this to save local businesses and local jobs.

“Everyone I've spoken to likes the idea. Even though these residents won't give their names I know who they are. They've got it in for me whatever I do.

“I don't get it. I feel very bitter towards these people. This is something that's really going to benefit the community.”
