THERE was a Dickensian theme at this year's annual Debden Day festivities.
The event, which celebrates the town and was attended by hundreds enjoying the sunshine today, was officially opened by 11-year-old Archie Duffy, who has secured the part of the Artful Dodger in the West End show Oliver, while there were also performances from the musical by Matt Oliver, Fagin and the Artful Dodgers.
There was also a special presentation to Sapper Jake Luton, who alerted a group of tanks that they were approaching an area containing roadside bombs while patrolling in the notoriously dangerous Helmand province in Afghanistan.
This action prevented the deaths of numerous soldiers.
In recognition of his bravery, the Debden man was mentioned in dispatches, an army record published in the London Gazette of soldiers who have been brave beyond the call of duty.
Sapper Luton was praised by Cllr Ken Angold Stephens, Loughton Town Mayor.
He said: “He is an exceptional young man who everyone in the town can be proud of.”
Cllr Penny Smith, Chairwoman of Epping Forest District Council, said: “It is fabulous to see so many people, especially so early in the morning.”
She added: “I hope everyone has a wonderful day. You've all made Debden proud.”
There was plenty to see and do at this year's Debden Day, which sees The Broadway become a traffic free zone for the day.
Children enjoyed the bouncy castle and the small Ferris wheel while refreshment was provided by an ice cream van and numerous cafes selling cooked breakfasts and sandwiches. There were also stalls selling craft work and plants to tempt bargain hunters.
Dave Stannard, 64, the day's organiser, of Luches Road, Loughton, hailed it as the best Debden Day ever.
“I am absolutely thrilled to see so many people. I want to thank all the volunteers who have been closing roads and setting up stalls since 6am this morning,” he said.
