THE public are being invited to tell the council whether they want the authority to adopt a directly elected mayor or a strong leader model.
The consultation process on the two systems of local democracy begins today (Monday).
The council will be forced to adopt one of the two systems after the elections in May next year.
Councillors can choose between having a directly elected mayor or a leader with more power.
A directly elected mayor system will see all executive power and control over cabinet given to one person.
The so-called strong leader system is closer to the current system in the borough, but strengthens the power of the council leader.
Under the current system in Waltham Forest, a council leader is appointed by the majority of the group’s councillors, who then appoints a cabinet.
The borough’s mayor is currently a ceremonial position but since 2000 councils can bring in the elected mayor system, subject to a ‘yes’ vote in a referendum.
People have until October 2 to decide which system they prefer.
