RESIDENTS will tonight learn whether Tesco can build a massive store, shops and more than 250 homes in Highams Park.
Members of the council's planning committee will consider whether to follow officers' recommendations and grant permission for the development, which has been badged Highams Green by Tesco.
The plan for the store, earmarked for land at the Highams Park industrial estate off Larkshall Road, has proved controversial with many, with the Highams Park Society and Forum both opposed.
Redbridge Council has also objected, fearing that the development will attract shoppers away from the south Woodford area.
But the Guardian has also spoken to residents and some shopkeepers who believe the store will regenerate Highams Park.
Councillors are tonight recommended to approve the plans, but with 39 conditions relating to the use of the building and the way it is to be constructed.
Tesco will also be required to contribute more than £1m towards local education services, parking, highway maintenance and health.
Tonight's planning meeting, which will only discuss the Tesco plan, will take place at the town hall, in Forest Road, Walthamstow, from 7.30pm.
