FOUR police officers have been recognised for their courage after arresting a man who hurled a meat cleaver at them.

The man, known to be violent, called police at about 9pm on February 8 this year, claiming he had attacked his heavily pregnant wife and she was bleeding.

He claimed to have a “chopper” and a “blade” and PCs Jake Sutton, Patrick Allen, Tony Meadowcroft and Greg Marsh were called to his flat in Churchfields, Woodford.

His wife had not been attacked and had left the flat but when the officers arrived, he confronted them with a knife in each hand, lashing out before throwing the knives towards the door.

PC Sutton said: “We created a rendezvous point close to the address. We used that point because there was a real possibility of things going wrong.

“Of course it was a frightening situation but we wanted to make sure the people inside were safe.”

PC Sutton tried to use CS spray on the man but it had little effect and he managed to get away.

Moments later, he returned with a meat cleaver, forcing the officers to use a fire door for cover, and he then hurled the blade at the door, taking a chunk out of the frame.

He managed to pick up two further knives but was hit with CS spray for a second time and the officers were able to force him to the ground.

PC Meadowcroft added: “This was different to most calls. We tried to speak to him but it was clear that wasn't helping.”

The four officers received commendations for bravery, team work and professionalism at a special ceremony today (Thursday).

The man was handed a five-month jail term for affray and possession of an offensive weapon by Redbridge magistrates.
