A NEW radio network has been set up in South Woodford shops in a bid to help combat crime.
Traders in George Lane are now linked together by radio, enabling them to talk to each other, as well as the Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) and the CCTV control centre in Ley Street.
Radio holders in George Lane are also linked to a similar network in Wanstead, aimed at providing improved communication within the area.
The scheme is an extension of the Redbridge Business Againts Crime (RedBAC) partnership, which has been in operation in Ilford town centre for the last six years.
Members are able to share pictures, statistics and reports so that they are better able to spot known criminals.
Data is then recorded and stored on a central database.
RedBAC co-ordinator, Reg Woda, said: “This scheme enables members and their customers to feel safer.
“It gives the radio users the facility to warn each other when troublesome individuals might be in the area.
“It is the glue that brings all the members together to deal with common problems.”
Members of the scheme in George Lane include Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Boots, The George pub and South Woodford library.
Similar schemes are also in operation in nearby Waltham Forest.
