THE finest and most exciting buildings in Wanstead and Woodford will be on show to the public this weekend as part of Open House London.
The annual event features guided tours through some 700 buildings across the capital, all free of charge.
Among those in Redbridge flinging open their doors are St Mary’s in Overton Drive, Wanstead, completed in 1790, which is the only Grade I listed building in the area.
The Victorian gothic glories of Bancroft’s school, in the High Road in Woodford Green, will be open for inspection along with the brick-built gazebo in Wanstead Park which is all that remains of the 17th century Wanstead Grove estate.
Visitors to the Quaker Meeting House in Bush Road, Wanstead, will be able to see the last resting place of the woman who graces the back of the £5 note, social reformer Elizabeth Fry, while the Victorian Barnardo’s Village in Barkingside, including the only remaining children’s church in the country, will also be open to the public along with the Grade II listed Christ Church in Wanstead Place.
