LEADING councillors have agreed to investigate the possibility of part-subsidising more new post offices.
Cabinet members last night decided to rubber-stamp a decision to contribute £20,000 a year towards the cost of operating the Orford Road post office, in Walthamstow.
The post office, along with another in Chingford Road, Walthamstow, was closed last year as part of Government cutbacks, prompting protests from customers.
But it is due to be re-opened after businessman James Brundle had a six-figure offer to buy it accepted.
Councillors also asked officials to investigate whether it is feasible to support more new post office developments.
Under one possible idea, developers would submit a business case for opening a post office and the council would then consider whether to subsidise it.
A report, signed by council leader Chris Robbins and deputy John Macklin, said the move “reflects that the council is targeting services according to need.”
