AN Olympic-themed family fun day is to take place at a Leyton school in a bid to help children hit the Government target of five hours of sport a week.
The event is to take place at Norlington School, in Norlington Road, this Saturday (September 26) and is aimed at encouraging people to take up sports.
Run through the Norlington School Sports Partnership, it will include demonstrations of martial arts as well as appearances from Olympic athletes Vicky Barr and Guy Djedje.
The fun day will also feature 'human table football', a bouncy castle, face painting and arts and crafts stalls.
Partnership development manager Tanya Irvine said: “The Government now has targets for schools but they don't have the capacity to provide that.
“We want to encourage students to join after school clubs. As well as being a fun day to unite the community, it's a way to get people involved in sport.”
The event will also feature information on the Government's 'Change4Life' scheme and will give visitors the chance to try new sports.
Miss Irvine added: “They can come and have a go in a fun, relaxed setting. There are things for little children right through to adults.”
She also hopes to garner further support from the council in a bid to hold an even bigger event next year.
She said: “As an Olympic borough, we need to raise the profile of sport. The aim is to inspire people to get more active.”
Council leader Cllr Chris Robbins will also be invited to the event, which begins at 11am and lasts until 4pm.
