A MILKSHAKE bar will be a magnet for anti-social behaviour according to neighbours if plans for it to stay open until 2am, seven days a week, are approved.

More than 70 people have signed a petition against the application by Cakes and Shakes, in Loughton High Road, which sells soft drinks, and takeaway snacks.

The new nightspot on the site of a former clothes shop, has already caused controversy after opening without planning permission, and its latest application for a late refreshment licence has caused widespread anger.

Resident Colin Corrigan, of Brooklyn Avenue, Loughton said: “I believe that it will attract children late at night and coupled with the post-pub people that it will attract, I think we have the makings of an issue that would be detrimental to the well-being of the town and a further distraction for the police.

“I like Loughton and I don't really want it to turn into Ilford.”

Mary Froud, of The Drive, Loughton, said: “I had understood that the quota for food outlets had already reached capacity for the High Road - understandably.

“Why then have we apparently got one more?

“As someone who lives in a road not too far away from the proposed cafe the thought of an outlet open till 2am particularly in that area causes me great concern.”

Shop manager Moshin Khalid states in his application: “The opening of a new, vibrant milkshake parlour will provide a large retail outlet where families and children can visit for a cool refreshment.

“We plan to create employment opportunities for local residents and wish to help with the regeneration of Loughton.”

The late licence will be decided by Epping Forest District Council's planning committee on Thursday, October 1.
