A WALTHAMSTOW man is hoping to bring back a slice of the Edwardian era by returning his street to its 20th century glory.

James Pitman, 48, chairman of the Winns Terrace Residents' Association, believes it may be possible to restore some of the street's former charm.

He said: “We look at Winns Terrace as being the main backdrop to the redevelopment of Lloyd Park.

“We started wondering what opportunities there were for us to make some changes.”

Designed by the Warner brothers at the beginning of the 20th century, the street has become increasingly modern.

And along with the residents' association, Mr Pitman had hoped to bring back the street's Edwardian paving slabs, as well as changing street lamps and street furniture.

Guy Osborne, the council's conservation officer, has already said the larger changes will not be possible.

But Mr Pitman remains hopeful that some of the smaller proposals might be given the green light, with the backing of the residents' association.

He said: “We wanted the opportunity to preserve the unique architecture on Winns Terrace.

“We're a very strong residents' group.”

The council will offer historic buildings grants to individual home owners hoping to restore the historic character of their houses.

Grants were given for the restoration of two Victorian Walthamstow houses in June this year, in Wingfield Road and Pembroke Road.

A budget of £18,100 is set aside for "the sympathetic maintenance, repair and restoration of historic buildings".
