A MISLEADING poster produced by the church which owns the former EMD building has been banned.
The advert claims ceremonial oil used by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) helped cure a boy’s heart defect.
The Advertising Standards Authority found the poster was irresponsible and likely to discourage people from seeking legitimate medical advice.
UCKG insists that the advert makes clear only “spiritual support” was given to the boy.
The poster quotes a mother saying her son had a heart and lung problem and doctors expected him to die.
She goes on to say: “At the UCKG I was given some blessed oil to anoint my son with. Now that his heart and lungs are better I thank the UCKG for all the spiritual support I received"
A disclaimer in small print on the poster states: "The UCKG does not claim to heal people but believes that God can through the power of faith. Always follow your doctor's instructions."
Complaints about the poster were made by the British Humanist Association and two members of the public.
The UCKG hopes to convert the former cinema in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, into a church and community space.
