THE CONTRIBUTION to the borough made by Redbridge's pensioners will be celebrated with a series of special events this week.
A wide variety of activities will be held across the borough from tomorrow (Monday) to mark UK Older People's Day - on Thursday, October 1.
The council-run programme has been welcomed by pensioners' groups who believe the voluntary work and support provided by older people deserves greater recognition.
Jim Kendal, 71, of Cranbourne Avenue, Wanstead, said his efforts, and those of other pensioners, should be celebrated.
He said: "We do lots of things that go unrecognised.
"Older people are often just viewed as a burden, but we provide free childcare to our own children, volunteer in charity shops and at churches and day centres, and do all sorts of other things that go unnoticed.
"It's about time this was publicised more."
The week's events will include 'chair exercise' classes and Tai Chi taster sessions held at different venues across the borough.
Libraries will also be hosting special activities, with a craft workshop being held at South Woodford and afternoon tea and cake due to be served up at Aldersbrook.
Ram Bhandari, chairman of the 50+ Forum and a trustee of Age Concern Redbridge - which have both helped organise the week, said: "I'm very pleased that the council, voluntary sector organisations and older people’s groups in Redbridge are working together to celebrate the contribution older people make to our borough."
