A LEYTONSTONE school has won an award recognising its achievements in bringing the wider world into the classroom.

Connaught School for Girls, in Connaught Road, Leytonstone, won the International School Award through the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

Children and staff have been involved in projects with other schools in France, Ghana, Portugal, Spain and Turkey, leading to the win.

The awards have now been running for 10 years and aim to develop and recognise outstanding practice in adding an international dimension to teaching and learning.

Deputy head Gareth Cross said: "We had to demonstrate that our curriculum has a real internatial flavour.

"Our textiles classes have worked on international dress and our art department worked on African mask making."

On October 16, representatives from Connaught will attend an awards ceremony in London and winners will be presented with their awards by broadcaster and journalist George Alagiah.
