A DOCTOR who wrongly gave the all-clear to more than a dozen women with breast cancer is to find out next week whether a supervision order against him will be lifted.

The General Medical Council (GMC) is due to hold a review hearing of Dr Kong Fa Lan Keng Lun on Tuesday (October 6), who was disciplined after a series of blunders at St Margaret's Hospital in Epping.

Dr Lan Keng was lead clinician at its screening unit between March 2003 and November 2004, during which time he wrongly diagnosed 18 women after failing to correctly carry out a number of crucial tests which would have identified their health problems.

Aubrey Nathan, 79, is the husband of one of Dr Lan Keng's patients who was wrongly given the all-clear.

His wife, Frances, died last November of cancer.

He said: “This man should not be allowed to practice. And it wasn't only my wife that got it, there were many others, but many of them have also died now. I hope the GMC do the right thing, but we'll see.

“When my wife first discovered the lump she had tests but the doctor told her it wasn't anything to worry about. She was so shocked when she later found out that it was.

“Frances was such a vibrant person. When she died it was very, very sad and it devastated a lot of people.”

Following the discovery of Dr Lan Keng's errors, 5,765 of his cases had to be reviewed.

The GMC imposed the two-year supervision order on the doctor in September 2007, and while he was allowed to continue practising as a radiologist, Dr Lan Keng was also barred him from any management role.
