CONSERVATIVE councillors are calling for the one-way system in the centre of Leytonstone to be scrapped to regenerate the High Road.
Councillor Ed Northover, the prospective parliamentary candidate for Leyton, is calling for a debate on the future of Leytonstone town centre.
Cllr Northover said: “As a local resident, I am worried about Leytonstone's prospects.
“I believe Stratford City could be the death knell and that we should be acting now to plan the sort of sustainable centre we want rather than let it slowly die.
“Mine and the Conservative group's view is that the one way system, no matter how well intentioned, has not worked.
“I would like us to debate the suitability of a fully pedestrianised Church Lane allowed by reopening the High Road as two-way.
“The pedestrianised Church Lane could host weekend markets and events allowing local people to come to the area free from traffic on Church Lane.”
The Guardian is awaiting a response from the Labour group to the Tory proposals.
What do you think? Do you want to see the one-way system axed?
