GOLFERS say they are still being blighted by fast cars tearing down a road which runs through their course, six months after they launched a campaign demanding traffic calming measures.

More than 220 members and staff at Theydon Bois Golf Club signed a petition calling on Essex County Council to do something about motorists speeding along the 60mph stretch where they cross between the 14th and 15th holes.

It came after a number of accidents and near-misses at the site, including one where a member in his 80s was left with a broken collarbone after his golf trolley was clipped by a car as he crossed the road.

Within weeks of the Guardian reporting the plight of golfers at the club back in April, the county council agreed to erect a handful of new warning signs made from reflective material, but members say the measures are not enough and are now considering their next move.

Club manager Colin Stewart said: “We did get the new signs put up which was an improvement and we are appreciative of that, but many drivers just don't really pay much attention to them.

“We were hoping to have something done about the central line markings.

“There are cars driving along at 60mph and there is unlimited overtaking.

“We would definitely like to see more done about it and it is still an issue. It's still quite dangerous and we've got no control over it.”

A council spokesman said: “Essex County Council responded to the original request by agreeing to install additional signage along the road, which means there are now the maximum number of signs in place to accurately reflect the hazards along this stretch.

"We would happily look into the situation again if we received another request.”
