BEAUTIFUL Indian silks and embroideries will go on display alongside block printed fabrics at the William Morris Gallery this Saturday, to mark the centenary of Victorian textile entrepreneur Thomas Wardle.
Experiments in Colour explores the collaboration between Wardle and the Walthamstow designer William Morris.
The pair shared a passion for Indian textiles, impressed equally by the colours and designs. Wardle travelled extensively in India, observing and collecting samples, while Morris studied Indian textiles at the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A Museum).
The bringing together of these two talented minds during the mid- to late- 1870s holds a distinctive place in the history of textile design and production and is a visual feast for all those interested in the arts and crafts movement.
Exhibition curator, Dr Brenda King, says: “Between them, William Morris and Thomas Wardle produced some of Britan’s most iconic textiles. They needed each other.”
l Experiments In Colour runs at the William Morris Gallery, Lloyd Park, Forest Road, from Saturday, October 10 to Monday, January 25.
