PERFORMING arts groups claim they are being 'priced out' of using Redbridge's best venues after plans to increase charges at the borough's only specialist drama centre were revealed.

Proposals for a hike in charges at Redbridge Drama Centre have been approved by the council's Children's Services Scrutiny Committee and are now just waiting to be passed by the cabinet.

If given the go-ahead the plans would mean cash-strapped amateur theatre companies and dance groups having to find extra money to put on performances or to use the venue for rehearsals.

Alexandra Hughes, founder of the Alexandra Hughes School of Performing Arts in Woodford Green, said groups like hers were already struggling to find affordable venues in the west of the borough.

She said: "This just seems to be part of a general increase in the charges to use council halls in Redbridge.

"We used to use Hawkey Hall for our performances, but they raised the prices their so much that we just couldn't afford to use it anymore.

"It's important that the council ensures that these community venues remain affordable for the whole community - particularly groups like ours that are on very tight budgets.

"The council always goes on about getting people community involved in community events, but now they need to prove it."

These views were shared by Ashley Gunstock who founded the Wanstead-based Poetic Justice Theatre Company.

He said: "The drama centre is a fantastic community facility and should remain affordable for everyone to use.

"It is already hard enough for theatre companies to put on performances without more price rises."

Church End ward councillor, Richard Hoskins - who sits on the drama centre's advisory board - said: "If this goes ahead there will be price rises above the rate of inflation for use of the centre.

"It is the UK's only remaining council-owned drama centre and has wonderful facilities, but it only gets half of its funding from Redbridge and must raise the other half itself.

"This rise in charges is to ensure it remains a top class drama centre."

The Alexandra School of Performing Arts will be performing the popular pantomime Aladdin at the Memorial Hall, in Woodford Green High Road on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November.

Tickets can be bought on the door.

A spokeswoman for Redbridge Council said: "The daily charge for the Drama Centre to primary and special schools is £165 per day and for secondary schools is £175.

"For this the schools receive a full day's teaching, endless support and advice and the use of all Drama Centre equipment. The daily rate is extremely competitive.

"Discussions about the fees are ongoing but, as with fees for all other Council services, they will be looked at as part of the budget process in the New Year. No final decision has been taken."
