A LONG-STANDING record has been smashed by a champion potato grower.
Roger Myson, 63, astounded his friends in the Abridge Potato Club when he grew a mammoth 102 pounds of spuds from one seed.
The plucky potato producer has now taken home the first prize in the annual village competition for the third time in four years, and has broken the previous record haul by a whopping ten pounds.
He said: “I suppose it's perseverance. I spend a lot of time looking after it, making sure it's well bedded and well watered.
“I'm going to eat them all. I had a bit of mash last night and it was very nice.”
Formed in 1934, the Abridge Potato Club now has 35 active members who it gives out seeds to every February, before the results are dug up in October.
Mr Myson, of Knights Walk, Abridge, said: “It's been a tradition in the village for many, many years. I joined four years ago and I won the first time I took part.
“It's great fun, and you get to go to each other's houses for a drink and meal on your way round.”
