THE FUTURE of an historic Victorian church has been thrown into doubt after plans were announced to sell the building.
The congregation at Cambridge Park Methodist church have opted to put it up for sale because they do not have the funds needed to replace its damaged roof and ceiling.
Worshippers have not used part of the church since a chunk of ceiling collapsed several weeks ago - leading to fears about its safety.
A final decision will be made on the sale by the Methodist Church's synod in April next year.
The church's minister Rev Eleanor Jackson, said: "Whilst the prospect of the closure of the church is understandably a cause for great sadness amongst the congregation, many of us are also looking forward to the future as we continue our life of worship and witness alongside our brothers and sisters at the Methodist Church on Hermon Hill.
"We recognise the impact the church council's decision will have on those who use our church halls on a regular basis and we will be in contact with them as soon as possible.
"In the meantime, since our synod does not take place until 24 April 2010, all church hall lettings are secure, at least up until that time."
The congregation will now hold its services at Wanstead's other Methodist church in Hermon Hill.
