CAMPAIGNERS are preparing to do battle to protect an historic estate once again - after developers announced plans to submit a THIRD new building application for the site.

Telford Homes intends to hand in a revised plan to build new homes and flats in the grounds of the former Chepstow House, in Leicester Road, Wanstead - after its previous application was turned down by Redbridge Council in July.

The Counties Residents Association (CRA) and Wanstead Society both objected to the firm's last proposals on the grounds that they were out of keeping with the area's newly acquired conservation status and would see the building of too many new homes.

And the two groups have vowed to do the same again if they feel the new plans conflict with the character of the Grove Park Conservation Area - where the estate is located.

CRA chairwoman, Helen Zammett, said: "If the plans are little different than the old ones than of course we will continue to oppose them.

"We are not going anywhere.

"Hopefully Telford's will have taken our concerns from the last time into account and we'll see that in the new designs.

"Our biggest concern was the look for the two blocks of flats planned for the Nutter Lane side of the development which were completely out of keeping with the area."

Her views were shared by fellow CRA member, Malcolm Dowers, of Leicester Road.

He said: "They will have to do better than the last application, that's for sure.

"The Nutter Lane blocks in the old design just looked like offices."

Ms Zammett and Wanstead Society chairwoman, Anne Barlow, will meet with a representative of Telford Homes to discuss the firm's new proposals on Monday.

Mark Parker, Group Managing Director of Telford Homes said: "Telford Homes is committed to the progression of the site located on Leicester Road, Wanstead, and continues to communicate with Redbridge Council and local residents on the future plans for the site.

"Telford Homes are yet to decide whether to appeal the council’s decision on the previous planning application but will look to incorporate the council’s recommendations into a revised plan for resubmission."
