FREE locks, chains and alarms will be fitted to the homes of pensioners across Redbridge as part of a new council-funded crime fighting scheme.
The HandyVan initiative will offer residents aged 60 and over - and with less than £20,000 in savings - the chance to have extra security devices fitted to their homes.
Those who meet the criteria, and want to take part in the scheme, should contact the council to arrange a security assessment of their home.
A council spokesman said: "Following recommendations to the client about security updates, and once permission is granted, products such as mortice locks, window locks and door chains can be fitted to make homes more secure.
"Carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms can also be provided and fitted. Minor repairs and DIY tasks like putting up shelves or building flat pack furniture can also be carried out.
"Residents can receive up to four visits a year."
