DUST and crushed concrete are being blown across residential areas from mountains of earth on the Olympic Site, a concerned resident has claimed.
Laurence Wortley of Westdown Road, Leyton, is worried there may be a health risk from the dust, which he says is picked up by gusts of wind and rain and deposited across residential areas.
Growing mountains of dirt on the Eton Manor site can be seen from Temple Mills shopping centre in Marshall Road.
Mr Wortley, 70, said: “There were pyramids of crushed concrete and now it is like a mountain. The concrete is in the air all the time.
“It collects on cars and window sills and when it rains, it forms a thin layer of mud. Our local residents must have been breathing it in for a year, but it has got progressively worse.”
Mr Wortley has registered his concerns with the council and his ward councillors.
He added: “My concern is the health effects on residents because there is acid in concrete. I personally have noticed I have been coughing more since it has been going on.”
A spokesperson for the Olympic Delivery Authority, which is overseeing the building of the Olympic Park, said contractors take steps to suppress the dust and carry out regular monitoring of the air quality and dust levels around the park to ensure they are within national guidelines.
He said: “Steps taken include covering soil stockpiles with plastic or an environmentally safe binder and, where appropriate, dampening them down as well as road cleaning. We work hard to be a good neighbour and in the next of our regular meetings with local people we will be discussing any concerns they may have.”
The ODA has recorded one complaint received by a resident about dust, which it said transpired to be in relation to a different construction site.
