TREVOR Goodchild (‘We must fight against increase in flights’, October 8th,) is correct in saying that we must fight against an enormous increase in aircraft flying over Leyton and Wanstead. This was the whole purpose of the Liberal Democrats calling a public meeting, which was very well attended.
Historically, Waltham Forest council failed to respond to the original consultation on the London City Airport’s master plan for expansion and subsequently, Newham council did not consult Waltham Forest on the planning application and granted permission for expansion. On top of that, there has been a change in the flight path of London Heathrow flights. Both of these factors put together means that our skies are now flooded with aircraft.
I have written to the cabinet member for investment and enterprise, Terry Wheeler, asking questions about the failure of his department to respond to the original consultation. We are also presenting a motion to the next full council meeting, calling for action by Waltham Forest council.
I sincerely hope that the other two political groups will support us in our efforts to safeguard against this attack on the environment and quality of life of the residents of Leyton and Wanstead.
Cllr Farooq Qureshi, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Leyton and Wanstead.
