THE work of Afro-Pop artist Ghariokwu Lemi (pronounced Harry-O-Coo Leh-Me) is on display at the arc Gallery. The exhibition, entitled Politics, Life and Lyrics, brings a taste of this critically acclaimed artist’s unique style of illustration which also focuses on using new media, including plastic.
Most people will recognise this self-taught artist’s work on the cover sleeves of musician and political activist Feli Kuti’s albums. The exhibition is no less controversial documenting issues of leadership, migration, war and economics that still exist, not only in Nigeria, his country of birth, but on a global scale.
“I play the resonator and megaphone with my art,” states Ghariokwu. “By virtue of my self-training I am a free-stylist and very eclectic in nature. One would say my art is rebellious, comical, political, even erotic. Most of all, I am very good in pictorial narration, realism and iconicity. My working style is flexible, incorporating social commentary, word-juggling, political cartooning and sometimes graffiti.”
In the context of Black History Month, there is no better time to shine the spotlight on this enduring social commentator.
Politics, Life and Lyrics is at the arc Gallery, 11 Hale Wharf, Ferry Lane, Tottenham, until Thursday, November 12. Telephone: 020 8885 1252.
