NEW measures to reduce the danger of a notorious road are welcome but not quite far enough, residents have warned.
Pudding Lane, in Chigwell, has been the scene of numerous serious accidents and fatalities for decades with Derrick Russell, 60, from Loughton the last person to die there in 2007.
Essex County Council has now informed long-suffering residents on the road that new measures including a 30mph speed limit, warning signs and an entrance closure will definitely be in place by December.
Colin Evans' house on Pudding Lane has been struck several times by motorists losing control round the bend.
He said: “Residents here have been campaigning for 20 years. We've been pushing very hard over the past two years for the Russell family and this is very welcome news.”
Mr Evans said he was particularly grateful for a newly announced council measure which will see an access point from Gravel Lane made no entry- forcing motorists on that road to stop and make a left hand turn.
He said: “That's a very, very good thing for us. They roar off Gravel Lane into Pudding Lane sometimes at 30 to 40mph. If they have to stop it will put a lot of them off.”
Neighbour Tom Yusef, also welcomed the measures though he warned they did not go far enough and the blind bend in the road, near Mr Evans' house, would not be affected by the scheme.
He said: “We all thank the council. Their efforts will certainly make some difference but the one thing that needs to be addressed is that black spot. The only way they can address that is with extended road humps.”
