DOZENS of youngsters got a taste of life in ancient Britain when a Roman Legion occupied their school for the day.
Year eight pupils at Bancroft’s School, in Woodford Green, found out about Roman culture, art and military equipment during a visit by members of historical re-enactment group, Legio XIIII.
The children got the chance to try on costumes, play popular Roman games, and even learn a few essential tactics for battle during the event, which was held as part of their history studies.
Classics teacher Anthony Smethurst said: "This day is always great fun, the pupils really enjoy themselves and learn a lot at the same time.
"The Legio XIIII team said that this was one of the best school visits they have experienced."
School spokeswoman Karen Rogers, said: "Two of the year group dressed up in full Roman splendour to re-enact a Roman marriage ceremony, although the bride’s rather ghoulish make up was not considered to be very attractive to the children’s 21st century eyes.
"There were plenty of memorable hands-on experiences with pupils and their teachers given the chance to handle replicas of Roman artefacts, weapons and try on armour.
"They also got an insight into life in the army, with a bit of marching around the hall and wall building, as well as the traditional Roman lifestyle."
