FAMILIES living near a historic former garage which is due to be redeveloped have raised concerns about the future of its disused petrol tanks.

Residents have demanded to know what is planned for two large fuel containers which still sit beneath the forecourt at the old Cuckfield Garage in Wellington Road, Wanstead.

Developers have won permission to convert the Edwardian building into flats and shops, which means the ageing tanks will have to removed - leading to fears over possible fuel leaks or subsidance to the garage and surrounding buildings.

Paul Turner, of Wellington Road, who helped lead a successful campaign to prevent developers demolishing the building in 2007, said removing the tanks could prove complicated.

He said: "They will have to be very careful when taking them out, and obviously there are safety implications that need to be considered.

"The tanks are large, and there's a danger that it could cause damage to the garage itself when they're taken out.

"There's also probably residue in the bottom of the tanks that needs to be dealt with.

"Filling them in is another option, but we need to know what the plans are for dealing with this."

These views were backed by mum-of-one Janet Yeoman of Wellesley Road.

She said: "What happens when they take the tanks out?

"They are reinforced so how do we know the holes won't just cave in when they are removed?

"They should consult us about this first."

Richard Bonshor, representing developers Belgrave Properties, said: "We are discussing what to do with the petrol tanks with the Fire Brigade and the council.

"We would fill the gaps in with granular material which will be solid, so there will be no danger of subsidence.

"The tanks have been emptied of fuel and filled with water to ensure they are safe.

"Contrary to any rumours the building will not be demolished. We will redevelop it according to the plan approved by the council."
