SPECULATION about the site of a former restaurant has finally been laid to rest after work began to turn the building into a tapas bar.
The building in George Lane, South Woodford, has been empty since Mediterranean eatery 'Tuus' closed down earlier this year - with rumours circulating that it would be turned into anything from a mosque to a community centre.
But the Guardian can reveal that a new 'Indian-fusion' tapas bar will open at the site during the next fortnight - adding to the area's already eclectic mix of restaurants.
The opening will add to the area's growing attraction as a destination for discerning diners - who continue to flock there despite the economic downturn.
Red Mantra will serve a range of contemporary Indian dishes in a relaxed tapas style according to its owner, Amit Kundra.
He said: "This will be a completely new eating experience.
"We will serve an exciting range of food in a relaxed atmosphere.
"We are working hard to get the placed finished during the next couple of weeks."
An invitation-only opening night is due to be held at the restaurant next Wednesday, November 4.
